What wood do you use?

I work with fallen or sustainably sourced local hardwoods that are air or kiln dried to a very low moisture reading. All the wood I work on us planed and sanded to an ultra fine grit. I use cherry, maple, apple, birch, and alder wood for my work.

Watch my YouTube video to learn how to choose the best woods for pyrography.

Where do you get your wood?

I source my wood from local live edge wood suppliers such as Anglewood and The Twisted Maple Company.

I also produce my own slabs. For example, I salvaged a cherry tree that fell on a neighbour’s property during a powerful storm. This tree was milled into slabs and cookies then air-dried for 2 years.

I sometimes come across smaller hardwood rounds on Etsy. These are hit and miss in terms of quality. Sometimes they are split or cracked. I contact the supplier before purchasing to ensure I can purchase a batch that is free from cracks.

What do you seal your wood with?

I use Danish Oil and Clear Satin Polycrylic wood finish to seal my artwork.

Danish Oil is heat and water resistant. It is a durable finish that adds warm tones to the wood when cured. I prefer Danish Oil to seal cherry wood and maple wood.

Clear Satin Polycrylic only slightly alters the colour of the wood grain when cured. It adds a slight sheen to the wood. I prefer Polycrylic to seal birch and alder wood.

Where can I learn pyrography?

I offer tutorials on YouTube and I've published a pyrography book for beginners.

My Hippie North YouTube Channel is where you can find beginner and intermediate pyrography tutorials. You will learn materials you need to set up a woodburning hobby as well as foundation pyrography techniques required to succeed in any pyrography project. You'll also find freehand pyrography tutorials and advanced technique tutorials to enhance your creativity and realism skills.

My published book is titled Woodburning Workshop and is an essential handbook that includes the foundational pyrography knowledge on tools, wood, wood finishes, and pyrography techniques. This book is great for anyone looking to start a woodburning hobby or an established pyrographer who wants to brush up on their foundational skills and knowledge. An eBook of Woodburning Workshop is available in my online shop and the physical copy is available on Amazon.

Where can I buy your art?

Do you ship worldwide?

I currently ship to Canada, USA, UK and Europe. If you are outside of these countries and would like to purchase an original piece of art please send an email to info@hippienorth.com to inquire. Some countries have strict import laws for live-edge wood and would need to be investigated for eligibility prior to making a purchase.
