Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to my frequently asked questions.

What wood do you use?

I work with fallen or sustainably sourced local hardwoods that are air or kiln dried to a very low moisture reading. All the wood I work on has been planed and sanded to an ultra fine grit. I use cherry, maple, apple, birch, and alder wood for my work.

These woods are not the only options for pyrography. One of the most common woods, especially for beginners in basswood.

Watch my YouTube video to learn how to choose the best woods for pyrography.

Where do you get your wood?

I source my wood from local live edge wood suppliers such as Anglewood and The Twisted Maple Company.

I create my own slabs, for example, I was able to salvage a cherry tree that fell on a family property during a powerful storm. This tree was milled into slabs and cookies and air-dried for 2 years.

I sometimes come across smaller hardwood rounds on Etsy. These are hit and miss in terms of quality. Sometimes they are split or cracked. I contact the supplier before purchasing to ensure I can purchase a batch that is free from cracks.
