For the base layer...

Solid Nib Tool

The Creative Versa Tool by Walnut Hollow is the tool I started my woodburning journey with and I still use this tool today.

This tool paired with the universal nib is my go to choice for shading because it is durable and doesn't bend under heavy pressure or high heat. It allows me to burn light or dark shading precisely.

I enjoy creating the base layer of my artwork with this tool before I add details and textures over top with my wire nib system.

I highly recommend this tool to beginners.

Check out my Hippie North YouTube channel where I teach fundamental techniques using this tool.

For Large Shading...

Butane Torches

To reduce the time it takes to shade a large area solid black I use my butane torches.

For shading small areas I use the Butane Torch Pen by Promise.

For shading large areas I use the Butane Torch Kit by Lexivon.
